It is easy these days to become discouraged about the current state of our political system. In an era of discouragement and disillusionment my blog, "Common Sense", will aim to cast light and a little old fashioned common sense on our world of politics and our political system.
I hope that you will participate with me during this semester to spread common sense.
I think the purpose of the Common Sense blog is truly to support the idea of utilizing common sense in our political system. She does a nice job of taking a mid-line stance and her viewpoints are consistent and well written. By her use of graphics and advertising spots, she does a nice job of visually drawing people in and engaging them.
My favorite part of her blog is her heading. It has nice graphics with bright colors and I stopped every time I pulled up this blog to get the effect. However, it is in her clear description of her intent that made me read and re-read the paragraph. It’s a no-nonsense statement written without rhetoric or overly cheerful statements. It spoke straight through the mess and immediately engaged me. I also really liked the variety of graphic images she used. They were appropriate to the material and funny. Laughter is a great way to ease people into a political topic, especially if it’s a touchy subject to most. I also really liked the scrolling news ticker at the top. I found myself spending a few extra seconds before scrolling to the other articles to see what was next on the ticker.
One thing I find distracting is the advertisements. As much as I like seeing how she’s incorporated them, I find myself irritated as I scroll down the page and one-third of the page is ads. I’d much prefer to have them in between each article in a small blurb or less of them along the side. While I liked the videos on the YouTube link, at first, I wasn’t quite sure what each video was or if it applied to the blog itself or was a general link. I also would have preferred an “X” in the corner of the videos to exit as opposed to clicking on “I am done with this video.” However, these are minor technicalities since there’s not much to dislike about this blog.
Overall, I really liked the blog. It is clear she has put a great deal of work into it, especially for stating she’s a first time blogger. I think she does a great job of voicing her opionions in a way that you find yourself answering her thoughts out loud. I would think that is the ultimate compliment.
